NEOGEO POCKET

NEOGEO POCKET is a handheld videogame console released by SNK in October 1998. SNK developed this console to realize the conception to introduce the titles of NEOGEO which the company release as an arcade video game system. However, unfortunately NINTENDO released GAMEBOY COLOR on 21th October 1998, one week before the release of NEOGEO POCKET. SNK announced that the company was going to release NEOGEO POCKET COLOR, an upper compatible model 5 months later at the same timing of the release of NEOGEO POCKET. Although SNK released the upper compatible model NEOGEO POCKET COLOR on 28th March 1999, BANDAI also released the handheld videogame console WONDER SWAN on 4th March 1999, when it was 15 days later after the release of NEOGEO POCKET COLOR. The consoles features the high specification of 16 bit CPU and TFT liquid crystal display,  at the time. Moreover, SNK released its connection cable which can be connected to SEGA’s DREAMCAST which was release at that timing and it can enable NEOGEO POCKET to link to DREAMCAST to play the best selling title such as “King of Fighters” and “CAPCOM vs SNK” series. But the company couldn’t utilize the high specification and realize NEOGEO titles in the console. They pointed out that the commercial failure of both this handheld console and HYPER NEOGEO 64 caused SNK’s business decline. Finally SNK went bankrupt in October 2001, accordingly the development of NEOGEO POCKET was automatically stopped.
